What Is UV Water Disinfection?
Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is a physical water treatment process that uses short-wavelength UV light (typically 254 nm) to inactivate microorganisms by damaging their DNA, preventing them from reproducing. Unlike chlorination, UV leaves no chemical residue in the water and does not alter taste, odour, or pH.
UV disinfection is effective against bacteria, viruses, protozoa, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, algae, moulds, and other harmful pathogens that may be resistant to chlorine.
How Does a UV System Work?
Water flows through a stainless steel chamber containing one or more UV lamps enclosed in quartz sleeves. As water passes around the lamps, microorganisms absorb UV radiation at 254 nm — the wavelength at which DNA absorption peaks. The DNA damage prevents the organisms from replicating, effectively neutralising them without killing them outright.
Key parameters:
- UV dose (mJ/cm²) — the amount of UV energy delivered per unit area of water. Regulatory standards typically require 30–40 mJ/cm².
- UV transmittance (UVT) — how well the water transmits UV light. Highly turbid or coloured water reduces UVT and requires a larger system.
- Flow rate (m³/hr) — determines the contact time and chamber size needed.
UV Disinfection Applications
- Pharmaceutical water systems — WFI loops, purified water distribution
- Food and beverage industry — process water, CIP rinse water
- Municipal water treatment — drinking water disinfection
- Wastewater reuse (STP/ETP) — tertiary disinfection before discharge or irrigation
- Swimming pools and cooling towers — supplementing chlorine treatment
What Certifications Should a UV System Have?
For industrial and pharmaceutical applications, look for:
- NSF/ANSI 61 — US standard for drinking water system components
- Australian WaterMark Level 1 — equivalent to NSF/ANSI 61, required for pharmaceutical water systems
- DVGW W294 — German standard widely accepted across Europe
- CE marking — European conformity
