Why Sludge Dewatering Matters
Sludge dewatering is the process of removing water from the sludge generated in water and wastewater treatment plants, reducing its volume and weight for easier disposal or reuse. The two most common mechanical dewatering technologies in India are the screw press and the filter press (plate and frame press). Choosing the right one depends on your sludge type, required cake dryness, and budget.
How a Screw Press Works
A screw press consists of a rotating screw inside a cylindrical screen housing. Sludge is fed at one end, and as the screw turns, it moves the sludge forward while progressively squeezing out water through the screen. The dewatered cake is discharged at the other end. The process is continuous, slow-speed, and quiet.
How a Filter Press Works
A filter press consists of a series of filter plates covered with filter cloth. Sludge is pumped into the chambers between the plates under pressure. Water is forced through the filter cloth and out of the press, leaving a solid filter cake. Each cycle takes 1–4 hours, after which the press opens and the cake drops out. The process is batch (not continuous).
Detailed Comparison
| Parameter | Screw Press | Filter Press |
|---|---|---|
| Operation type | Continuous | Batch |
| Cake dryness (%DS) | 18–25% | 25–45% |
| Energy consumption | Very low (0.1–0.5 kWh/m³) | Higher (pump energy) |
| Maintenance | Very low (no cloths to replace) | Filter cloths need regular replacement |
| Noise/smell | Enclosed, low odour | Open cake discharge, more odour |
| Footprint | Small | Larger |
| Operator required | Minimal (auto operation) | Operator needed for each cycle |
| Best sludge type | Biological sludge (STP, ETP) | Chemical sludge, ETP sludge |
| Capital cost | Moderate | Lower initial cost |
Which Should You Choose?
Choose a screw press if: you have biological sludge from an STP or ETP, want fully automatic unattended operation, prioritise low energy cost, or have limited space. The slightly lower cake dryness is acceptable for most Indian STP disposal (landfill or compost).
Choose a filter press if: you need maximum cake dryness (for incineration or hazardous waste), you are treating chemical sludge from a clarifier, or capital cost is the primary concern and operating labour is available.
